도마복음 번역 (1~9장)

근본주의 기독교에서 이단으로 규정한 소위 '영지주의 기독교' 도마복음.. 저는 이 도마복음이야 말로 예수님의 본 모습을 진실하게 기록한 유일한 성경이라고 생각하고 있습니다. 예수님께서 자신의 가르침을 제대로 이해하던 제자 토마스에게 탄식하시듯이 말씀하신 것이 바로 도마복음입니다. 한편, 이 도마보다 예수님의 뜻을 더 정확히 궤뚫고 있었던 제자가 바로 유다라고 하는 것도 상당히 설득력이 있습니다. 요즈음 미국에서 이 유다복음으로 시끄럽습니다.

일부 성경학자들이 한국말로 번역한 것이 있었지만 단순 직역을 해놓아 도통 무슨 뜻인지 전혀 이해가 되지 않았습니다. 그래서 내가 직접 한번 해봐야 하겠다고 생각했습니다. 여러가지 영어해석본을 비교하면서 원뜻이 훼손되지 않는 범위내에서 의역을 하기로 하였습니다. 의역을 했음에도 뜻이 제대로 전달되지 않는 것은 제 내름대로 해설을 첨부하겠습니다.

놀라운 것들이 나옵니다. 우리가 아는 바와는 전혀 다르게 예수님께서는 폭력적이고 무자비한 야훼신을 부정하고 계셨습니다. 이것을 제일 먼저 염두에 두고 읽기 시작한다면 도마복음을 이해하시기가 훨씬 수월할 것입니다. 예수님께서 만일 한국인이셨다면 함부로 반말짓거리를 하지 않으셨을 것이므로 예수님의 말씀도 경어체로 하였습니다.

영어 번역본은 두가지를 택했습니다. 두번째 영문 번역본은 괄호안에 표기하였습니다

Prologue

These are the secret sayings that the living Jesus spoke(uttered) and Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.
 
예수께서 살아계실때(생명의 예수님께서) 이르셨던 비밀의 말씀들을 도마가 받아 적었다.

1. And he said, "Whoever discovers the interpretation of these sayings will not taste death."
(And he said: "Whoever penetrates the meaning of these words will not taste death!") 
 
그가 말씀하셨다. "누구든지 이 말의 진정한 뜻을 깨닫는 자는 죽음의 고통을 맛보지 않을 것입니다"

(육체가 죽지 않는다는 뜻이 아니라 영적인 영생을 얻으리라는 뜻) 



2. Jesus said, "Those who seek should not stop seeking until they find. When they find, they will be disturbed. When they are disturbed, they will marvel, and will reign over all. [And after they have reigned they will rest.]"
 
(Jesus says: "Let him who seeks cease not to seek until he finds: when he finds he will be astonished; and when he is astonished he will wonder, and will reign over the universe!")
예수께서 말씀하셨다. "진리를 갈구하는 자들이 진리를 발견할 때까지 멈추지 말게 하십시요. 진리를 깨닫게되면 처음엔 혼란스러울 것이나, 곧 경탄하게 될 것이며, 그들이 세상을 가르치게 되고 그것을 세상에 널리 펼칠 것입니다. 그들은 그제서야 평화를 얻게 될 것입니다"

(야훼신이란 실상 없는 존재 혹은 유대족의 부족신이었음을 알게 되고, 새로이 만민에게 공평하신 상징적 하나님을 알게 되면 처음에 혼란스러울 것이나 곧 그 하나님의 진정한 의미를 깨닫고 평화와 행복을 얻을 것이다) 



3. Jesus said, "If your leaders say to you, 'Look, the (Father's) kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the kingdom is within you and it is outside you. When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living Father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you live in poverty, and you are the poverty."
 
예수께서 말씀하셨다. "만약 누군가가 당신들에게 '보라 (아버지의) 왕국이 하늘에 있노라'고 하는 말이 사실이라면 공중의 새들이 당신들보다 먼저 그곳에 갈 것이요, '바다에 있노라'고 하는 말이 사실이라면 물고기들이 당신들보다 먼저 그곳에 갈 것입니다. 그러나 천국은 그런 곳에 있는게 아닙니다. 천국은 당신의 안에 있으며 또 당신의 곁 어디에나 있습니다. 당신이 당신 자신을 알게 되었을 때 비로소 당신은 그것을 깨달을 것이며, 진실이 당신 가까이 있음을 이해하게 될 것입니다. 그러나 당신이 만약 당신 자신조차 모른다면 당신은 계속 어리석게 살아가야 할 것입니다."

(하나님의 나라, 천국이란 당신이 죽어서 가는 그 어떤 곳이 아니라, 지금 바로 당신의 마음 속에도 있고 당신 주변 어디에나 있는 곳이다. 당신이 깨닫는 것이 바로 그곳인 것이다)

4. Jesus said, "The person old in days won't hesitate to ask a little child seven days old about the place of life, and that person will live. For many of the first will be last, and will become a single one."

(Jesus says: "Let the old man heavy with days hesitate not to ask the little child of seven days about the Place of Life, and he will live! For it will be seen that many of the first will be last, and they will become a single one.")

예수께서 말씀하셨다. "나이 많은 늙은이도 7일 된 아이에게 생명이 있는 곳에 대하여 묻기를 주저하지 않을 것이고, 그러면 그 늙은이는 살게 될 것입니다. 시작이 끝이 될 것이며 결국은 하나가 될 것입니다."

(아주 민감한 부분입니다. 예수님의 이러한 사상은 부처님의 윤회사상과 일맥상통합니다)



5. Jesus said, "Know what is in front of your face, and what is hidden from you will be disclosed to you. For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed. [And there is nothing buried that will not be raised."]

예수께서 말씀하셨다. "당신 앞에 있는 것을 알려 하십시요, 감추어졌던 것이 드러나게 될 것입니다. 세상에 감추어진 것은 반드시 드러나게 마련입니다.”

(진리는 먼곳에 있는게 아닙니다. 먼곳에서 찾으려하기 보다는 당신의 내적 자아를 깨닫는 순간이 바로 진리를 얻어 당신이 자유로워 지는 순간입니다)



6. His disciples asked him and said to him, "Do you want us to fast? How should we pray? Should we give to charity? What diet should we observe?" Jesus said, "Don't lie, and don't do what you hate, because all things are disclosed before heaven. After all, there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and there is nothing covered up that will remain undisclosed."

(His disciples asked and said to him: "Do you want us to fast? How shall we pray, how shall we give alms, what rules concerning eating shall we follow?" Jesus says: "Tell no lie, and whatever you hate, do not do: for all these things are manifest to the face of heaven; nothing hidden will fail to be revealed and nothing disguised will fail before long to be made public!")

제자들이 예수께 묻기를, "금식하여야 합니까? 어떻게 기도해야 합니까? 우리가 자비를 베풀어야 합니까? 어떤 음식을 삼가야 합니까?" 예수께서 (동문서답하듯) 말씀하셨다. "거짓말하지 말고, 미움받을 짓을 하지 마십시요. 모든 것들이 천국에서 드러나기 때문입니다. 결국에 가서는 감춘 것중 드러나지 않는 것은 없으며, 또 드러나지 않은 채 덮혀지는 것도 없습니다."

(하나님을 위한다며 쓸 데도 없는 거창한 걸 하려 하지 말고 다만 우리 자신을 속이지 말고 남에게 나쁜 짓을 하지 말라는 말씀입니다)

7. Jesus said, "Lucky is the lion that the human will eat, so that the lion becomes human. And foul is the human that the lion will eat, and the lion still will become human."

(Jesus says: "Blessed is the lion which a man eats so that the lion becomes a man. But cursed is the man whom a lion eats so that the man becomes a lion!")

예수께서 말씀하셨다. "행운이란 [우리가 사자를] 잡아먹는 것과 같습니다. 그러면 그 행운은 우리가 됩니다. 불행이란 [사자가 우리를] 잡아먹는 것과 같습니다. 우리가 그 불행이 됩니다."

(예수님은 은유법을 즐겨 썼습니다. 은유를 이해하지 못하면 예수님의 본뜻이 왜곡될 수 밖에 없습니다. 세상의 행불행은 얼마나 적극적, 긍정적으로 마음먹느냐에 따라 달라진다는 뜻입니다.)



8. And he said, "The person is like a wise fisherman who cast his net into the sea and drew it up from the sea full of little fish. Among them the wise fisherman discovered a fine large fish. He threw all the little fish back into the sea, and easily chose the large fish. Anyone here with two good ears had better listen!"

(Then he says: "A man is like a skilled fisherman who cast his net into the sea. He brought it up out of the sea full of little fishes, and among them the skilled fisherman found one that was big and excellent. He threw all the little fishes back into the sea; without hesitating he chose the big fish. He who was ears to hear, let him hear!")

그리고 그가 말씀하시길, "우리는 바다에 그물을 던지는 노련한 어부와 같습니다. 지혜로운 어부는 크고 좋은 물고기 한 마리를 선택하고 작은 물고기들은 모두 바다에 되돌려 보냅니다. 이런 지혜를 가져야 합니다."

(사람의 욕심은 끝이 없습니다. 옥석을 가릴줄 알고 내가 족한 것을 아는 것이 바로 지혜입니다.)



9. Jesus said, "Look, the sower went out, took a handful (of seeds), and scattered (them). Some fell on the road, and the birds came and gathered them. Others fell on rock, and they didn't take root in the soil and didn't produce heads of grain. Others fell on thorns, and they choked the seeds and worms ate them. And others fell on good soil, and it produced a good crop: it yielded sixty per measure and one hundred twenty per measure."

예수께서 말씀하셨다. "보십시요, 농부가 한 줌의 씨를 뿌립니다. 어떤 것은 길 위에 떨어져 새들에게 먹히고, 어떤 것은 돌 위에 떨어지니 뿌리를 내리지 못해 열매들을 맺지 못합니다. 또 어떤 것은 가시덤불에 떨어져 벌레들에게 먹혀버립니다. 극히 일부만이 좋은 땅에 떨어져서 그것이 육십배, 백이십배의 곡식을 맺습니다."

(진리를 찾는 것은 수많은 노력과 시행착오가 있는 법이지만, 애써 찾은 그 진리의 밝음이 세상의 모든 무지몽매를 밝힐 수 있습니다.)
